Harbor Patrol Rescues Six When Outrigger Capsizes
« on: January 22, 2010, 08:29AM »
Another reminder for why we have our rules for taking the canoes out in the open water....
------------------------------
Jan. 21, 2010- Harbor Patrol deputies rescued six men after their outrigger capsized about 4:20 p.m. today outside the harbor entrance off Corona del Mar.

Two fireboats arrived and found the men hanging onto the outrigger and began towing them into the harbor, said Deputy Jim Slikker.
“One guy fell off,” he said. “We got him on board, but the tow line snapped.”

Deputies told the other five men to swim to the boats, which were bobbing in the choppy water, at times disappearing from sight behind waves. The waves were steep and 12 to 16 or 17 feet high, he said, and both boats’ engines flamed out several times. The rescuers put the boats in neutral to protect the swimming men, who also were trying to avoid jetties, lobster traps and rocks.
Finally, four men were on one boat and two men were on the second boat. Slikker said because of the dangerous surf, the boats were staffed with three people. “We needed every single person,” he said.

The Newport Beach Fire Department checked the men, who had a few cuts and were cold. They took hot showers and appeared relatively unharmed, Slikker said. The men were in their 20s and 30s, but no other information about them or their boat was available.
Boaters have been warned not to go on the water during this week’s storms.

“It was really dangerous,” Slikker said. Two helicopters circled the area during the rescue efforts.

looks like they did not make it too far out... that water looks gnarly even inside the breakwall.

A ship in harbor is safe - but that is not what ships are for.

catamaran huh?
Looks like the plug is missing from the rear air chamber or it got a hole in it. Water got in and sunk that part of the canoe. Poor choice going out without spray skirts. Way more fun on a one man where huli recovery is no big deal even under heavy conditions.
I hope the conditions are as bad for the race on saturday in San Diego. No more boring flat water please.
Gotta love a challenge.
